Helping Siblings Understand When One Child Needs More Attention

Blog

When one child has special needs, siblings often have questions, feelings, and worries they don’t always share. Here’s how you can help them feel included, valued, and loved.

Start With Simple, Honest Explanations

  • Use age-appropriate language.
  • Be clear that their sibling isn’t “bad” or “naughty.”
  • Explain that everyone needs different kinds of help.

Example: “Your brother’s brain works differently, so he needs extra help to feel calm.”

Validate Their Feelings

Siblings may feel:

  • Jealous or left out
  • Guilty for feeling frustrated
  • Confused or embarrassed

Let them know it’s okay to have mixed feelings. You can say: “It’s normal to feel all kinds of things, and you can always tell me.”

Create Special Time

Even 10–15 minutes of one-on-one attention can help siblings feel seen. This could be reading together, going for a walk, or simply talking without interruptions.

Involve Them When Possible

When appropriate, let siblings help with small tasks or celebrate progress. This builds connection instead of resentment.

Supporting siblings doesn’t mean having all the answers—it means showing up with openness, patience, and love.
